National Council of Jewish Women Hosts League of Women Voters Speaker
National Council of Jewish Women will feature guest speaker Cinde Weatherby, president of the Austin League of Women Voters, at a Nov. 14 luncheon. Weatherby will discuss voter rights, voter suppression and issues germane in today’s voting regulatory environment.
Before May 2016, Weatherby was the Austin League's vice president for community relations and coordinated the League’s Capitol Corps. The Capitol Corps delivers position-driven LWV Texas testimony and policy information to members of the Texas Legislature. Weatherby also serves as the LWV Texas chair for voting rights and elections law issues. She began League service after retiring from a long public and private sector transportation career. Weatherby, a native Texan, moved to Austin in 2009.
The League of Women Voters, a nonpartisan political organization, encourages the informed and active participation of citizens in government and influences public policy through education and advocacy. The League is a membership-driven organization that consists of national, state and local Leagues that work together on many issues.
The local League, LWV-Austin Area, is an all-volunteer organization that produces a website, an Austin-oriented newsletter, the Voters Guide (around election time), and various other publications. The organization organizes and conducts educational activities including monthly topical meetings, discussion groups, study task forces, and public policy and candidate forums.
