AJA Students Envision the Future of Downtown Austin
by Robyn Lindenberg
Austin Jewish Academy fourth and fifth-grade students and their senior buddies recently participated in The Community’s Table: Shaping the Future of Downtown Austin, a communitywide art project in partnership with the Downtown Austin Alliance.
The students and senior buddies were chosen because of the unique intergenerational art program spearheaded by Austin Jewish Academy’s art teacher, Susan Slomowitz, in partnership with Shalom Austin’s Senior Adult Programs Office.
The theme for the art installation is “Picture your downtown Austin in 10-15 years. What would you like to see?”
The students and their senior buddies were invited to think about this question and write and illustrate their visions for downtown Austin on a block of wood used as a vision board. The vision boards joined others in a community public art piece installed in Republic Square Nov. 18.
The Downtown Austin Alliance has asked this same question at many other community events around the city over the last few months. By compiling the vision boards that will collectively become the top of a community table, Austinites for years to come will be reminded of the diversity of voices, perspectives, needs and desires that shape the vision for the future of downtown Austin.
The Downtown Austin Alliance recognizes that the continued progress and growth of Austin present significant opportunities for the city. In response, the organization is facilitating a community dialogue to create a vision and action plan for downtown Austin. Every voice is important, and with everyone’s input, the community can build a downtown for everyone.
The Community's Table is commissioned by the Downtown Austin Alliance, curated and produced by Public City, and fabricated by Hatch Workshop. ■
