Shalom Austin Leaders Join Thousands at General Assembly

Nov. 12-14, thousands of professionals from Federations across North America gathered together in downtown Los Angeles for the 86th annual Jewish Federations of North America General Assembly. This year, nine staff members and volunteers from Shalom Austin attended the event:

Dan Kraus, board chair
Rabbi Daniel Septimus, chief executive officer
Joy Nathan, chief advancement officer
Wendy Goodman, communications director
Wade Monroe, board member and Jewish Foundation Cabinet co-chair
Lecia Sud, Women’s Philanthropy and Annual Campaign mentor
Jewel Sud, JFNA National Young Leadership Cabinet member, Young Adult Division board member, Women’s Philanthropy Cabinet member
Amy Kline, JFNA board of trustees member, JFNA National Young Leadership Cabinet and Women’s Philanthropy Cabinet member

Brandon Mond, JFS Cabinet member and Moishe House Southern director of advancement
Business and world leaders in Jewish philanthropy filled the agenda with stirring talks and meaningful presentations on Jewish education, engagement, philanthropy, community and global issues.

Among the prominent speakers were Israeli President Reuven “Ruvi” Rivlin making his first major address to a Jewish audience outside of Israel. Rivlin spoke on key issues in the Israel-diaspora relationship.

Live via satellite, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Jewish Federations of North America Board Chair Richard Sandler discussed the Western Wall and other important topics.

During the opening plenary, Sandler reinforced the Federations' commitment to pluralism in Israel and other key movement issues. JFNA president and CEO Jerry Silverman called for unity to take on tough questions and set high goals for the next decade of Federation.

Hurricane Harvey flood victims from Houston bravely stepped onstage to share their moving stories of recovery and to thank the Federations’ collective relief effort to help restore and rebuild the community.

The next General Assembly will be held in Tel Aviv Oct. 22-24, 2018. ■
