Mothers from Austin Participate in the First Inaugural Jewish Women’s Renaissance Project (JWRP) Mission to Israel
Ten women representing Shalom Austin participated in Momentum, an eight-day journey through Israel with the Jewish Women’s Renaissance Project (JWRP) from November 28 through December 5, 2017. The JWRP program seeks to inspire mothers to transform themselves, transform their families, their communities, and the world. This was the first year Shalom Austin has partnered with the JWRP, thanks to generous help and support from community leaders Deborah Rudy, Lily Saad and Carol Silverberg.
All ten of these adventurous women were selected to join the more than 200 in this cohort from around the United States and Russia. The criteria for their participation was a demonstrated commitment to Jewish values, a pledge to raise their families in a Jewish home and a desire to continue their own Jewish learning. The group shared a deep passion of support for the State of Israel that was strengthened throughout the trip.
The Austin women decided to arrive a day early to visit Shalom Austin’s Partnership region in the Western Galilee. While there, they explored the city of Akko, visited the Wings project in Moshav Bustan HaGalil, a center for professional apprenticeship and vocational training for young people with disabilities to become independent, toured the Medical Center located only six miles from the Lebanese border, cooked up a dialogue with different women from all over the region, met children at the Hofei HaGalil elementary school and learned about the Ethiopian experience in Kibbutz Evron.
All the women returned home with a deep, eternal connection to Israel, a profound kinship with each other, and a heart filled with Jewish values. They will continue their learning together over the next year with monthly sessions dedicated to strengthening their love of Israel, family and one another. ■
