Angelo Florez: JCC Youth & Adult Sports Manager

What is your role at Shalom Austin?
I am the Youth & Adult Sports Manager.

What is your background and what do you do at Shalom Austin?
I have spent the past 20 years working with sports, fitness, and children in some aspect or another. Through college, I worked as a personal trainer, taught swim lessons, worked at a daycare, and coached a multitude of sports from middle school to high school.

After receivingmy degree in kinesiology from UT Arlington, I taught P.E. and coached in the Dallas area where I also took on the Strength and Conditioning position for the athletic programs.

I moved to Kyle, TX to be with myfiancé, now wife. There I worked as a personal trainer for 3 years before being blessed with the opportunity to work at Shalom Austin.

My job here is the perfect combination of everything I love doing – sports, fitness, and working with children. I run both the youth and adult basketball leagues which is always fun and exciting.

Super Sports after school enrichment classes are probably the best few hours I have at work during the school year and being the assistant administrator for sports camps has been a wonderful and great learning opportunity for me. There is never a dull moment working with children!

What do you feel has been your most rewarding experience so far?
Knowing that what I do makes a difference in many people’s lives. When a child learns a new skill and develops a bit more confidence in themselves, it is personally rewarding. Also, when a parent expresses their appreciation for just doing what I enjoy.

What is your favorite part of working here?
If you don’t know yet, I am what many call a “Social Butterfly.” I enjoy people – from members and the classes I teach, to fellow employees, and league members. My favorite part of working here is being able to meet and talk to everyone, and I do mean everyone, from the 6 month olds at the ECP to our senior adult members and everyone in between. Oh, and dancing. No one judges me for my dancing and random songs. (Laughs.)

Do you have any exciting programs or projects in the works?
Aside from our leagues and enrichment classes, Pickleball is the ever growing and developing program we have going. What started off as a small program has now become a very popular one here that I am having to adjust and modify as it grows. Pickleball is definitely something that everyone should try.

What would you say to someone who is thinking about getting involved with Shalom Austin?
Get involved!  Shalom Austin is a fabulous place to be. There are so many things to do here, It’s not just fitness or sports. I’m sure we can find something that you and/or your family will enjoy.
