Mosaica Opens at JGallery

Mosaica Opens at JGallery

Mosaica: Texture and Reflection will be on view in the JGallery from October 23 through November 28, 2017.  Following the successful Mosaic exhibition at the JCC in 2014, the Austin Mosaic Guild and JGallery are again collaborating on a juried exhibition that highlights Mosaic’s diverse art form and process with an exhibition that explores the dimensions of texture and reflection in each artistic endeavor. Entries for this exhibition were judged on visual appeal, originality, execution and creative use of materials. Mosaica is estimated to include up to 70 artworks, both representational and abstract, displaying a broad variety of materials, styles and finishes.

In celebration of this opportunity to view outstanding examples of mosaic art within a single venue, the opening reception hosted by the Visual Arts League on Thursday, October 26, 7-8:30 pm will include remarks by the President of Austin Mosaic Guild and artists' discussions about their work in the exhibition.

Mosaic art, one of the principle forms of expression in antiquity, is experiencing a major revitalization. Artists around the world are discovering the compelling beauty and challenge of the mosaic technique in achieving their artistic visions.  Mosaica offers a rare and enriching opportunity to experience, in person, the unique diversity of the best of contemporary mosaic art, an art form that is so rich and compelling that its full essence can not be truly captured in a photograph.

Established in 2008, Austin Mosaic Guild (AMG) is a central Texas area group of mosaic artists, from beginners to professionals, offering members educational, exhibition and social opportunities in a supportive community.  Since 2009, AMG has exhibited in the downtown window of Kruger's Jewelry on Congress Avenue and in 2011 the Guild's mosaic work was shown at Austin Bergstrom International Airport’s art gallery. This summer the Guild exhibited at the Old Bakery Emporium Art Gallery. Community outreach projects include the design and execution of the mosaic wall at Dell Children's Medical Center Healing Garden in honor of the 25th year of the Austin Pet Therapy program. Other AMG projects are a large installation for the Austin non-profit People Fund and mosaic panels for Houston's Smither Park. ■

Mosaica will be on view in the JGallery at the JCC Oct. 23-Nov. 28. Opening reception will be held on Oct. 26 at 7p.m.
