Shalom Austin hosted Israel’s Ambassador to the United States, Ron Dermer, on his first visit to Austin, Texas on October 9 at Congregation Agudas Achim on the Dell Jewish Community Campus. The Ambassador addressed over 500 community members and visitors who attended the event. Ambassador Dermer spoke about topics on U.S.-Israel ties, anti-Semitism in the world, sovereignty for the Jewish state, and his optimism for the future of Israel.

“We are honored to have Israeli Ambassador Ron Dermer visiting Shalom Austin to share his vision of the unbreakable partnership between the United States and Israel,” said Rabbi Daniel Septimus, Shalom Austin CEO.

Dermer was born and raised in Miami Beach, Florida. He earned a degree in finance and management from the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania and a degree in philosophy, politics and economics from Oxford University. For three years, he was a columnist for the Jerusalem Post. In 2004, Dermer co-authored with Natan Sharansky the best-selling book, "The Case For Democracy: The Power of Freedom to Overcome Tyranny and Terror," which has been translated into 10 languages. From 2005 to 2008, Dermer served as Israel's Minister of Economic Affairs in the United States. From 2009 to 2013, he served as senior advisor to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. ■
