The quarterly meeting of the Texas Jewish Historical Society was held in Abilene October 5 through 7. Members attended Friday night services at Temple Mizpah. Saturday morning the society returned to the synagogue to hear about some of its history.
Saturday afternoon, destinations included the 12th Armory Division Memorial Museum, the Frontier Texas Museum and the Jewish section of Abilene’s Elmwood Memorial Cemetery.
Saturday night, Abilene City Councilwoman Donna Albus presented a humorous after dinner speech about Abilene’s colorful history.
The board of directors voted to name the Jewish archives in the Bob Bullock History Museum in Austin in honor of Debra Winegarten, a past president of TJHS who passed away recently. Winegarten wrote several books on Jewish topics.
