Shalom Austin Staff Spotlight
Amy Hyman: Development Director
What is your role and what do you do at Shalom Austin?
I am Shalom Austin’s development director. Our team connects community members to their passions, to their Jewish giving and to each other.
What is your background and what brought you to Shalom Austin?
Throughout my professional career, I have always worked in nonprofit organizations. My first full-time job after college was helping families enroll in federally-funded health insurance programs.
After witnessing many systematic challenges, I enrolled at the LBJ School and received my master’s degree in public affairs with a focus on nonprofit management. Since then, I have shifted toward development work and spent nearly five years at JDRF, building a community of support and raising funds for type 1 diabetes research. A serendipitous coffee meeting with Tracy Solomon in 2013 is what opened the door to this opportunity at Shalom Austin.
What do you feel has been your most rewarding experience so far?
The people! Our community is filled with so many incredibly passionate, smart, innovative and fun people. I value all of the relationships I have built with our lay leadership and our professionals. Together, we are building something great! To be specific, I had a pretty special first week on the job. It was the 2013 Maccabi Games and the campus was bustling with teens, parents and volunteers. It was a true representation of our community coming together to create such a meaningful experience for more than 1,000 teens. That is a memory that will always bring a smile to my face.
What is your favorite part about working here?
Being a native Austinite, it has been pretty crazy and exciting to experience our city’s growth. I feel so lucky to work for an organization that is planning for the future and is laser-focused on building a vibrant Jewish community for everyone to participate in. The lives that we change and the lasting impact we create through philanthropy is very fulfilling.
Describe any exciting programs or projects in the works?
IGNITE! on Sunday, March 25 at the JW Marriott is our premiere fundraising event of the year that is bringing the entire community together on one night. We will have record-breaking attendance and I can’t wait for the feeling of having 1,200 people in the room! I get chills just thinking about it. We are excited about engaging so many people in the powerful work that we do and also encouraging attendees to get plugged in to areas of interest across Shalom Austin.
What would you say to someone who is thinking about getting involved with Shalom Austin?
