Celebrating Israel’s Birthday at JGallery
By Robyn Lindenberg
The JGallery and Austin Jewish Academy unite to celebrate Israel’s 70th birthday through the power of unique and imaginative art. The opening reception for the students’ art show will take place on Tuesday, April 17, from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
The community and AJA families are invited to join together to hear AJA Art Specialist Susan Slomowitz speak about the art projects and recognize student artists for their work. Elementary students use oil pastels, watercolor, acrylic paints and more to examine and honor different aspects of Israel. One grade will observe and interpret Israel’s trees, another grade will focus on Jewish symbols and how they relate to Israel, while another will portray Zionist figures and founding fathers.
The overarching goal of the show will be to focus on Israel’s achievement of 70 years and the Hebrew language itself. Spearheaded by Susan Slomowitz, AJA’s outstanding art program fosters creativity, self-expression and manual dexterity while incorporating math, science, language arts, Jewish and social studies. Students look forward to their art classes held in AJA’s spacious studio where they work on a variety of skills from drawing and painting to collage and sculpture.
Through a range of materials, students create art pieces that express their own stories, ideas and emotions. ■
