As Ballet Austin @ the J completes a successful spring semester, the dance class program is expanding this fall to include classes for children up to age 10.

Children as young as 18 months of age are exploring dance with Ballet Austin @ the J. The classes are designed to introduce movement and dance concepts that progress with children as they grow.

“Shalom Austin has greatly appreciated our partnership with Ballet Austin! Through this partnership, we have greatly enhanced the quality of dance training offered at the JCC,” said Shalom Austin Chief Programming Officer Shelly Prant.

“Everyone has been thrilled to have such a premier ballet school offering classes on our conveniently located site. Interest in this program continues to grow as evidenced by the increase in the number of participants. The Ballet Austin staff are top quality professionals and a delight to partner with,” she said.

Dance with Me classes are for children ages 18 months to 2 years with their parent, grandparent or caregiver. These classes help children become more independent and explore new ways of moving and connecting with others. These skills are essential for children’s physical, emotional and social development.

“Everything is really well thought out to be at my daughter’s level. It’s clear she’s just observing and taking a lot in from class,” said Paige Nilson, Dance with Me parent.

Creative Movement classes are for ages 3 to 5 years old and introduce children to dance through stories, music and games. This curriculum has been carefully designed to enhance physical and cognitive development, creativity and group interaction skills in a safe and fun group setting. They also help children develop life-long skills associated with academic success including self-discipline, self-confidence and the ability to concentrate and collaborate.

Children ages 6 to 7 years old enroll in pre-ballet, a prelude to formal classical ballet training. At this level, students are lovingly introduced to the history, etiquette and tradition of this centuries-old art form and learn the basic shapes, positions and coordination of ballet, enhancing both cognitive and physical development at a time when fine and gross motor skills are rapidly developing.

Beginning this fall, Ballet Austin @ the J will offer Level 1 classes which are designed for children ages 8 to 10 years old. Here, students build proper technique and strength with focus on the discipline of ballet as they learn the basic positions and are introduced to musical concepts. At the end of the year, students participate in a group performance that highlights the accomplishments of their studies.

Free introductory classes are offered once a month and are a great opportunity for parents to learn more about our program and for the children to experience a fun-filled class.

Parents who enroll their children in Ballet Austin @ the J enjoy benefits including a 20-percent discount on tickets to all Ballet Austin performances at the Long Center, discounts to dance and fitness classes and workshops at the Butler Center for Dance and Fitness, and free health and wellness talks, specifically designed for parents and students.
