More than 1,000 community members came together April 14 at the Fairmont Hotel in downtown Austin for a night of building connections and celebrating Shalom Austin. Chaired by Candy and David Goldstein and Heilla and Ted Lain, IGNITE! inspired donor contributions for the Shalom Austin Annual Campaign and the Generations Campaign. Nearly $1.5 million has been raised for the Annual Campaign and more than $1 million was raised for the Generations Campaign, after the conceptual architectural renderings were revealed that evening.

Additionally, Woman of Valor Nora Lieberman, Joe Krassner Campaign Leadership Award Ian Spechler and Hymie and Louise Samuelson Young Leadership Award Julie Franklin were recognized for their dedication and leadership. Erik Cohen, a local community leader who grew up in Pittsburgh, and Steve Halpern, Pittsburgh community leader, remembered the victims and those impacted by the Tree of Life synagogue shooting with moving remarks and a video message. Cohen and Halpern also reminded the audience of the importance of having a central convening organization like Shalom Austin during a time of need.

To close the night, Jeff Ross, “The Roastmaster General,” gave a hilarious stand-up comedy set and roasted some of the audience members.

Gifts to the Shalom Austin Annual Campaign provide crucial funding to sustain ongoing programs across the lifespan and care for Jews in need in Austin and across the globe. Gifts to the Generations Campaign will help build out our campus with needed upgrades, renovations and expanded facilities. ■
