On May 15, Jewish Austin Men (JAMen), Shalom Austin’s dynamic men’s group, closed its fourth season with guest of honor Terry Lickona, the legendary executive producer of “Austin City Limits,” the longest-running music series in American television history.

Lickona shared the story of his unexpected path to Austin and the world-renowned program, a turn of events that no one would have predicted, least of all the young American history student from upstate New York. As anticipated, attendees were eager to share their “Austin City Limits” experiences and ask Lickona about their favorite musical performances.

“We’ve been working to get Terry to come to a JAMen event for several seasons, and it was well worth the wait,” said Jay Rubin, JAMen co-chair. “Special thanks to Bob Frachtman for helping us line him up!”

In addition to Frachtman’s introduction of Terry Lickona, two additional JAMen founding and sustaining members were recognized for their outstanding leadership. Sandy Kress completed four years of sharing “Jewish Words with Friends,” a short and meaningful D’var Torah on the theme of each event. Bernie Mintz was recognized for spearheading the growing participation by Jewish men from Sun City Georgetown in JAMen.

Lickona’s much-anticipated presentation wrapped a season filled with a broad range of engaging speakers including Rabbi Ed Feinstein, senior rabbi of Valley Beth Shalom in Encino, California, and the author of multiple books; Ross Ramsey, executive editor and co-founder of The Texas Tribune; Avi Jorisch, an entrepreneur, Middle East expert and author of five books; Eric Fingerhut, president and CEO of Hillel International and recently announced new president and CEO of the Jewish Federations of North America; and Chris Del Conte, vice president and director of athletics at the University of Texas at Austin.

“This was a great season for JAMen and we’re thrilled to see so many of our members get so much enjoyment from these speakers and our events,” commented Burt Kunik, JAMen co-chair. “We have been hard at work scheduling Season 5 and have a great schedule of men—and a woman—lined up to share their expertise with our members.”

The JAMen Season 5 schedule includes a roster of groundbreaking thinkers, community leaders and experts, including Rabbi Jeffrey K. Salkin, senior rabbi, Temple Solel, Hollywood, Florida, speaking to “The Torah of Testosterone”; Joanne Lipman, former deputy managing editor of the Wall Street Journal, former editor-in-chief of USA Today and author of “That’s What She Said: What Men Need to Know (And Women Need to Tell Them),” speaking to “Sexual Politics in the Workplace”; Gregory L. Fenves, president, the University of Texas at Austin, who will discuss “Navigating the Challenges of Universities in the 21st Century”; Yaakov Katz, editor-in-chief of the Jerusalem Post presenting “War and Peace in Today’s Middle East”; Daron Shaw, professor of government, the University of Texas at Austin and co-director, FOX News Poll, who will discuss “A 20/20 Look at the 2020 Elections”; and Ira Forman, former special envoy to monitor and combat anti-Semitism, U.S. Department of State former executive director, National Jewish Democratic Council, who will discuss “Are American Jews Destined to Become as Vulnerable as the Jews of Europe?” ■
