Special to The Jewish Outlook

COLLEGE STATION — Texas A&M Hillel, in association with Texas A&M University and the Texas A&M System, will hold its third annual conference on Crypto-Jewish life in the Americas this month.

The conference is scheduled Thursday-Friday, April 8-9, on the Texas A&M campus, at Rudder Tower. The program will be held the first day in room 410, and the second in room 308. While the conference is free, donations toward further conferences are being accepted.

This year’s conference chairs are Hillel A&M’s director, Rabbi Peter Tarlow, and its program director, Melanie Weiser, with input from members of the Texas A&M campus community.

The conference will feature not only renowned speakers from major American academic institutions but also one of the first films on Crypto-Jewish life. Among the speakers are Tarlow, speaking on pre-Crypto-Jewish history; Dolores Sloan, on the survival of Crypto-Jews in 15th- and 16th-century Iberian Peninsula; Stan Hordes, on the Sephardic legacy in the Caribbean; and Dr. Roger Martinez, on new archival evidence regarding Luis de Caracal.

Closing the conference will be a special Shabbat service dedicated to Sephardic and Crypto Jews.

The conference hotel is Manor House Inn, 2504 Texas Ave. South, College Station 77840 (telephone: 979-764-9540).
